On June 17, wives, children, and grandchildren will honor dads. While many family members are visiting Say It With A Gift to search for the ideal Father’s Day gift, we thought you might like to know more about this June 17 holiday. While we have honored fathers for centuries, it was not until the 20th-century that it became a federal holiday.
On June 19, 1910, Washington resident Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to honor her late father, William Smart, who raised six children as a widower. While listening to a church sermon about Mother’s Day, she realized that fathers did not receive the same credit that they deserved. So, she came up with the idea to start a holiday to pay tribute to dedicated fathers everywhere.
Initially, she wanted to choose June 5 as this was the date of her father’s death. She worked with the local YMCA to plan a celebration. After the initial plans fell through, it changed to the third Sunday of the month of June. While local communities around the country began to have similar events, it was not until 1966 that Lyndon B. Johnson used an executive order to make it official.
In 1972, President Nixon recognized Father’s Day as an official holiday in the United States. Every June, children think about a current need and favorite things to come up with something that equals all the love and support they received over the years. If you are one of the people who is still thinking about what to give, here is our gift guide for Father’s Day.
1. Give A Personalized Gift
If you want dad to feel appreciated, a personalized gift will do just the trick. Our items enable you to inscribe and customize each piece with the name and date, a favorite saying, or a simple thank you. It will become a keepsake that your father will cherish.
2. Donate To Your Father’s Favorite Charity
If you have a dad who has everything, you might consider donating to your father’s favorite charity. You can also opt to give to a cause that helps parentless children so that your gift has a lasting effect on those who are without fatherly love.
3. Create A Heartfelt Card
Nothing says mass produced like an impersonal greeting card. Your dad would love to hear how much he means to you in a personal way. You can deliver your card with a personalized photo frame to share loving memories or lessons learned.
4. Celebrate With Your Dad’s Favorite Pastime
Does your father have a pastime he enjoys? Spending time playing chess, puzzles, or cards will enable you to enjoy the day together leisurely. If you have purchased our personalized wooden flask, a camping trip would also be enjoyable.
Thank you once again for allowing Say It With A Gift to be a part of your family celebrations. We invite you to honor your dad by sharing a Father’s Day memory with us on Facebook. #SIWAGFather
